Meeting Harry

It was Saturday morning and on the way to Harry's' flat I thought about going to a different place this time. I parked the car on his road and had a look on the near parks in Worthing. Harry came quickly. I asked him whether he knew the one, which looked rather big, behind the hospital not far from the pier. He said no but that he could direct me there. We drove there. The weather wasn't cold but windy. Harry, as soon as he saw a man in short sleeves, said it load "someone on short sleeves in this weather!".
I have so far found him quite good at noticing simple things that happen or exist around him and his capability on seeing the funny side. We parked the car. I didn't first have the strength to drag from my memory the events of Christmas break and rather preferred being quiet. It was him who asked first on my flight and how the Christmas time with my sister went on and if I had a good one abroad with her. About his, he said he had gone to Norwich to his sister place. He said he didn't have any present but they all had bought a train set toy for his niece, who is I think 2 or 3 years old, and that she had wondered how Christmas father knew she had liked this most. He then reflected on this and said she probably is going to believe it for another two or three years. We walked round the park. "Next year it will be twenty years I live here. It doesn't feel like that much at all". He said. "Twenty years!" I replied. "And you hadn't been on this park before." Which I quickly regretted saying it. We were almost at the entrance to leave the park that I saw a squirrel digging the leaves on the ground for food. I pointed it out to Harry. We stopped for few minutes watching it. The squirrel went behind the hedges and disappeared. I turned back and started walking but found that Harry is still watching. I stopped. After a couple of minutes the squirrel came back and went up the tree. We then moved to the car.

We saw no cafe on that area so we decided to go and park the car in the "zones end" area after the Pier and to walk back to the High street for a drink. It was too windy. Instead of going further to the Pier we soon stopped at a cafe and went inside. It was a small old fashion cafe. He ordered coffee and I tea. I then showed him the photos of the Christmas time with my sister; we talked over trivial matters and had many moments in silent. I noticed a seriousness on his face and on his eyes which gave me this impression to imagine that he reflects on and has an understanding of his condition and perhaps the pain he has been through, things he had been deprived of in life or the different person he might have been. But this is the case and true for all of us too. We both felt we liked the cafe and decided to come and have a lunch or breakfast there next time. We came out. I saw patches of clear blue sky among the clouds. On the way back to his flat Harry said he had enjoyed the meeting which I felt the same. Through that day(and today) his silent image came back several times to my mind. I think I am lucky I came to know him.
